Not Necessarily

Mona Chalabi

Brooklyn, New York, USA

As COVID-19 ravages the United States, Mona Chalabi merges data with public art in order to portray the true human cost of the pandemic. Not Necessarily will be Mona’s first permanent public art installation – a powerful memorial to the victims of COVID – in her home borough of Brooklyn. Her mission is to get to the heart of America’s response to the pandemic and refute the idea that we need to surrender our agency to this disease. Faced with the challenge of conveying her message to the public, Mona will works in a Brooklyn foundry and with New York communities hit hardest by the pandemic to reveal the racial and economic lines along which COVID-19 ran, and expose the inequalities that the pandemic exacerbated — ultimately making her work an urgent reminder of the need for change.
