Khalid AlBaih is one of the most prolific political cartoonists in the world, publishing an artwork a day for the last 10 years. His work, a confluence of journalism and art, first came to prominence during the Arab Spring. Khalid publishes his cartoons on social media under the name ‘Khartoon!’, a wordplay on cartoon and Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Khalid’s cartoons, which have become symbols for resistance and a challenge to
international publications including The Atlantic, PRI, NPR, New York Times, BBC, The Guardian and Al Jazeera. Khalid currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark where he is the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) PEN Artist-in-Residence. He is the 2018 inaugural Soros Arts Fellow for the Open Society Foundation and was the 2016 Oak Fellow at the Oak Institute for the Study of International Human Rights at Colby College in Maine. In 2018, Khalid was voted the fourth-best cartoonist in the world by the British online newspaper The Independent.
Khalid Albaih’s Healing the Revolution Fund supports Sudanese artists to deliver community health messaging, dialogue and rebuilding projects in the aftermath of the peaceful Sudanese revolution. It aims to rally a new generation of artists to direct their power of imagination to the healing of society in the aftermath of recent political and emotional traumas, and open new conversations about the re-imagining of Sudanese society in a post-pandemic world.
