Tim A Shaw (artist) and Niamh White (curator) founded Hospital Rooms, a charity that radically transforms inpatient mental health hospitals by bringing together artists and patients. Since their first project at Phoenix Unit in 2016, they have completed 14 ambitious projects and have commissioned more than 100 site specific artworks and led hundreds of workshops, collaborating with artists including Sonia Boyce, Julian Opie, Tschabalala Self, Anish Kapoor, Richard Wentworth and Mark T
On the frontline of a mental health crisis, exacerbated by COVID-19, London’s Hospital Rooms charity transforms the often hostile environments of government mental health facilities through the power of art. Funding from the Artists Response Fund would support projects at West Kent mental health rehabilitation ward; an ambitious project involving 18 artists working on 18 commissions across 3 units in a new build mental health unit in Torbay Hospital; a 5 artist project for a new social hub at the medium secure unit at Northside House medium secure unit, where floors, furniture, a stage, doors etc are all artworks for an exciting new social space; and part of an ongoing research project with Norwich Universtiy of the Arts be completed early 2022.
